EKN Exclusive: Ontario Regional Karting Championship

Filling a void created in Ontario Regional karting when the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship met its demise weeks ago, eKartingNews.ca is proud to announce a five round championship set to begin this May. Four individual track owners have made facilities available and splitting the quartet will be the continuation of one of North America’s greatest events: The 2008 Grand Prix of Barrie. If that weren’t icing on a cake, the Series has also secured status as an Official Rotax Max Challenge Qualifying Series and its Rotax competitors will be eligible to compete for positions on Team Canada this August in Grand Mere!

While an official RMC is big news for Ontario, Barrie creates karting royalty and the fact its Grand Prix will continue is making news on a much bigger scale. “The development of this new Series with Barrie included is extremely positive,” said Rob Howden of eKartingNews. “Any time a province’s clubs do something together, it’s a great step forward for the sport of karting.” Howden returned to Canadian airwaves last season when he called both the Barrie Grand Prix and the National Championships and he has already been tentatively booked to make twelve race calls once again this June on the waterfront.

While weekend format has yet to be determined, twelve classes are slated for the initial program with Rotax Max leading the way. DD2, Senior, Junior, and Mini versions of the worldwide formula will make up one third of the program joined by four Honda classes: Novice, Junior, Senior and Masters. Cadet, Junior and Senior F1-K will also be contested, and ICC will be promoted allowing for Stars of Karting seniors to have a similar program in the Greater Toronto Area. The inclusion of the shifter class will also aid in the Championship moving talented drivers into cars, the emphasis of a soon to be released Awards System.

The Championship will begin at Goodwood Kartways and move to Cameron Motorsport Park in May before heading North to the shores of Kempenfelt Bay and crowing the 2008 Kings of the Bay in Barrie. Mosport International Karting will host round four in July and after a break for the Canadian National Championships in August the schedule will wrap in September at Innisfil Indy.
