Racing the second of three consecutive weekends at Ocala Gran Prix, Devlin DeFrancesco will wrap the first of two Florida Winter Tour Championships beginning today. One week after beginning his first Snap-on Stars of Karting National Championship, the transplanted Canadian will complete the FWT International Rotax Max Challenge in Micro-Max.
DeFrancesco enters fifth in the overall classification having reeled off four consecutive top-ten finishes at Homestead Karting. Within a breath of the podium at the first event when he finished fourth and fifth, the eight year old followed with an eighth and seventh at round two, both times having to recover from early contact in the final. The drives from the back rescued his championship standing, and with two races left to run DeFrancesco is just 89 points from third overall.
In his first Stars of Karting race at Ocala last weekend, DeFrancesco had mixed fortunes for firstkart.com as he continues to learn the finer points of Cadet power. Ninth from the timed Friday session, he advanced to three heat races on Saturday. In the first, DeFrancesco jumped to sixth through the first lap, only to be knocked to the back before finishing fifteenth. Problems persisted through heats two and three where he crossed twelfth and fourteenth, and it lead to a Q14 for the Sunday prefinal and final.
DeFrancesco turned some of his best laps in the morning session, and timed his best of the weekend at 43.161 seconds. After climbing forward early in the prefinal, he raced in a four-kart pack for the race distance and crossed tenth at the end of it, four positions better than where he began and with the fastest lap in the bunch. In the afternoon feature, he slotted eighth, fell to ninth, jumped back to seventh and fought through the middle stages before dropping to thirteenth in the closing laps. It was another great learning weekend, and DeFrancesco will put his knowledge to the test as he continues in Ocala this weekend. |
