Four members of Alonso Kart USA will meet in Oklahoma this weekend as the team continues preparations for the 2009 US Rotax Grand Nationals at Oklahoma Motorsports Complex. The same venue will have a full paddock this weekend as drivers and teams contest the 2nd Annual Rotax Summer Shootout. Devlin DeFrancesco and Cole Glasson will see action in Micro-Max, Dore Chaponick will race Junior and the team’s newest member Andrew Hawkins will race Senior. Big things are expected from the group, as it heads in with wins and podiums from across the country.
A week ago DeFrancesco, Chaponick and Hawkins raced the Rotax Max Challenge South Florida along with Jack West, scoring two wins and three podiums. Hawkins dominated the day in his first run with FA Kart, taking pole with a lap time of 48.648 seconds and maintaining it throughout the day. He won the prefinal by three seconds, and went flag-to-flag in the final in securing a sweep of the day. West also stood on top of the blocks, and with his win moved to first overall in the Rotax Max Challenge points. After qualifying fourth, he moved to third in the prefinal and won the final in convincing fashion. Taking the lead on the first lap, he never lost it over twelve. In the same race, Chaponick crossed fourth. After a brief spell in fifth early on, he moved to fourth on lap four and stayed there the rest of the way at Homestead Karting.
Micro-Max racers DeFrancesco and Cole Glasson were both in the thick of a fight, albeit in different events. DeFrancesco was in South Florida where he qualified third and won the prefinal to take pole for the main event. He set his fastest lap of the day in the feature, but after leading the first two laps fell to third where he maintained podium position. Glasson was on top of the blocks after sweeping through his local Rotax Max Qualifier in Denton, Texas. Racing the round three of the Summer Series with North Texas Karters, Glasson took pole by two-tenths, won the prefinal by a kart length and checked out in the main event.
Action in Oklahoma begins with a day of practice Friday before working toward main events on Sunday afternoon.
