Alonso Kart USA heads north of the border this week as three team members are in Canada to compete in the 11th Annual Canadian National Karting Championships. The event marks the first time the team heads to Canada in full force, as Devlin DeFrancesco, Dore Chaponick Jr. and Jack West will have the full support of team manager Bobby Wilson and Supertune Rotax Race Engines’ Ben Cruttenden trackside under the Alonso Kart USA factory tent. The event doubles as the Canadian Rotax Max Challenge Grand Nationals, and is being hosted at famed Goodwood Kartways, just outside Toronto, Ontario.
The trio of drivers will race in a pair of classes, and all three are prime podium candidates expected to be front and centre when race action begins Friday. DeFrancesco has raced Goodwood many times this season already, and will be looking to pace the field in Micro-Max. The nine-year-old has prepared by racing across the continent in 2009, notably in the Florida Winter Tour, Rotax Max Challenge South Florida, and in several single events with Stars of Karting, Championship Karting International, and the recent US Rotax Max Summer Shootout where he placed second. The transplanted Canadian who now calls Florida home has also made prior trips to Canada in racing with the Toronto Racing Association of Karters at Goodwood and is already familiar with its unique podium procedure.
Both West and Chaponick will see the track for the first time this week, but will surely be dialled in when two days of practice come to a close on Thursday. The pair are well known national level karters in the US, perhaps best known for their epic battles in the Florida Winter Tour. Any Canadian that has travelled to compete in the Florida will surely be familiar with two of the state’s top racing prospects. West, from Sarasota, is the 2009 FWT Champion and Chaponick, from Miami, won the same Mini-Max Championship in 2008. Each has moved on to compete in rotax junior this summer, yet are prohibited from competing there in Canada due to age restrictions. Their experience with a full-sized chassis will surely make for a seamless transition backward this weekend.
