As the leaves turn colour in Southern Ontario you can count on two things; frost on the pumpkin and great racing at the Oktoberfest Grand Prix. For 28 years the Waterloo Regional Kart Club (WRKC) has hosted the Oktoberfest Grand Prix and this year was another great event. The 2009 edition of this great fall tradition was the second season that the race has been held at the club’s home track at Flamboro Speedway. This year’s event was once again well supported by the Ontario karting community with great numbers in all classes and nearly 140 racers looking for one more shot at the podium. Drivers came from all over the province to put on a great display of racing, and take home some great prizes. The race sponsor was Bailey Auctions, their support was greatly appreciated.
The WRKC uses a two heats and a feature format, which makes for great racing. Drivers draw numbers to set the field for the first heat and then invert the order for the second heat. Race director Mike Brittain had his hands full as drivers moved through the field on the road oval track at Flamboro Speedway. The action came fast and furious as nine classes took the green flag.
On track action in the Cadet A class, it was Taylor Wassink from nearby Millgrove, Ontario starting the feature from the pole position. Although she led every lap Ryley Hulme was never far behind. When the checkered flag waived Wassink was the winner by less than a kart length. This capped off a great season for the young racer as she was also the Brian Stewart Racing Karting Championship (BSRKC) Cadet class winner. Hulme hung for a second place finish, with Shelby Durnin in third, Nolan Quinton in fourth place and Peter Ditner claiming the final podium spot in fifth. In Cadet B it was Nathan Orbono with the win, followed by Naomi Whitney in second, Cole Knipping in third, Declan Dawson fourth and Travis Moberg finishing in fifth.

In Novice A it was Austin Bisschop with a dominant win to cap off a strong season. With less than a second between the next four karts Jordan Howse had his work cut out for him to finish in second, Jyeed Hutchinson was third, Taylor Mantel was fourth and Andre Fiorni was fifth. In Novice B the winner was Erin Collison, Tyler Paquette was second, Colin Ogilvie was third, Brandon Lowry was fourth and Brett Moberg was fifth.
Scott Nagel’s goal for the Oktoberfest Grandprix was to cap off a season in which he had already won the BSRKC and the WRKC Junior Lite championships. Nagel set the stage by having the fastest lap in both heat races. In the feature race Nagel started on the pole and led from the green flag to the checkered flag finishing the season with another big win. Brandon Hauck started the feature from the inside pole position and hung on to finish second, Justin Collison was third, Justin Billington and Clay Vaneerd were fourth and fifth respectively.
In the Junior Heavy class it was Eric Van Wyngaarden starting the feature race from the pole. EVW managed to hold off a hard charging Adam Racine for the first two laps, but the WRKC season champion was not to be denied and on lap three he fought his way past Van Wyngaarden and led for the rest of the race to take the victory. Tristan Gill managed to work his way up from his fifth place starting spot to finish in second. Van Wyngaarden finished in third, Austin Penney was fourth and Garrett Grist, making his first start in four-cycle in three years, was fifth.

In Senior Lite it was Tyler Weber’s day, winning both heat races, posting the fastest lap time in all three races, and winning the feature race. Kevin Monteith was the best of rest finishing second in the feature, David Miller was third, T.J. Marshall was fourth and the final podium spot was claimed by Marco DiLeo.
The Senior Heavy race was won by Corey Jones from his front row starting spot. T.J. Marshall claimed his second podium of the day finishing in second place, Shane Stickel was third, Sal Ditta was fourth and Mike Lyons charged forward to finish in fifth.
It was veteran racer Jake Collison earning the pole position for the feature race in the Masters class by winning both feature races. Collison was under a lot of pressure from Fred Jordan throughout the race, as Jordon made two runs at Collison’s top spot. Collison hung on for the win finishing just over a second ahead of Jordan at the stripe. Randy Packham was the third place finisher, Steve Lyons was fourth and the fifth place trophy went to Duane Cinnamon.
This brings to a conclusion another very successful season for the Waterloo Regional Kart Club. The club wants to thank everyone who helped make the Oktoberfest Grandprix a great event.
The club has already started planning for next year to be even bigger and better than this year. For more information about our exciting plans for next season visit our website over the winter at http://www.wrkc.on.ca |
