eKartingNews.ca Canadian Driver Rankings - Rotax Senior - 2009

Wrapping up our 2009 eKartingNews.ca Driver Rankings is Rotax Senior Max. A quick look at the numbers seems to indicate that Rotax Senior suffered a drop in field size quite possibly because of drivers moving to DD2 or cutting back in uncertain economic times. With that in mind, in many parts of the country, especially the Brian Stewart Racing Karting Championship, the numbers were great including 38 drivers at round three at Mosport International Karting. In 2009 a total of 132 drivers did at least one race for a total of 493 races run or about 3.7 races per driver. In 2008 a total of 175 drivers ran in 737 races for an average of 4.2 races run. In 2009 we looked at 25 major events while in 2008 there were 32 races in total translating to an average grid in 2008 of 23 drivers while in 2009 it fell to 19.7, a drop of 14% in field size.

On top of the eKartingNews.ca Driver Rankings for 2009 is PSL Karting/CRG driver Hugo Ouellette. The 2009 ASN Canada FIA National Champion used his strong performance at the Nationals to vault himself to the top of the ranking boards. Ouellette was strong all year and made a case for the #1 rank by winning wherever he went. In second spot is fellow PSL Karting/CRG driver Massimo Scotti, who scored well in Quebec and had a strong run at the Nationals. In the third spot is Pserra Racing/Birel driver Michael Vincec. Vincec made the switch to Red after round two of the BSRKC and hit the podium straight away. In the fourth spot is another Pserra Racing/Birel driver and the 2009 BSRKC Senior Rotax Champion Lorenzo Mandarino, who had a strong regional program that included wins in Ontario and Quebec. Rounding out the top five is GreenSpeed/Tony Kart driver Darren White. The eKartingNews.ca #1 ranked Rotax DD2 driver backed up that performance with solid runs in Senior including double duty at the Nationals were a top five result vaulted him to fifth in the rankings.

Rotax Senior Max #1 - Hugo Ouellette
Terrebonne, Quebec

Hugo Ouellette, the other Ouellette, is the younger brother of Pier-Luc best known as the 2007 World Champion in DD2. Stepping out from the shadows, Hugo had a stellar year in 2009 taking the win nearly every time on track. At one point in the season the 20-year-old racer from just north east of Montreal had six straight wins, including his National title at Goodwood Kartways. In fact he won six of his nine starts and never finished lower then fifth in events he entered in 2009 in his first year with the PSL Karting/CRG team. Hugo made the most of his CRG Road Rebel chassis this season with 2009 marking his second trip to the Grand Finals.

The spotlight for Senior falls on the top rookie driver in the rankings, 16-year-old Jonathan Tetreault from Ste-Julie, just east of Montreal. The SH Karting/Tony Kart driver had a great start to his Senior career with consistent drives in the top five, including a fantastic run at the 2009 Canadian Nationals were he cracked the top five taking fifth place, the highest scoring rookie in the field. In 2009 Tetreault took in nine regional and national events finding his groove by mid season and finishing the year in great from. Clearly the move to Senior was a good one as last year in the Junior rankings Tetreault sat in the 21st spot. Look for this rookie to impress in his sophomore season.
