In his second of two Florida Winter Tour starts last season, Max Preston appeared to capture lightning in a bottle at Ocala when he was among the fastest juniors on the continent and raced his way to a top five finish on Saturday and from deep in the field to a top-ten on Sunday. Now, with 2010 sponsorship from Inweld Corporation, Preston is set for a trip South this week and will have the chance to show what he can do in contesting the entire Florida Winter Tour Rotax Max Challenge.

“It’s just a very exciting time and I’m very excited about racing the entire Florida Winter Tour,” Preston said this week as he prepared to depart for round one in Orlando. “Without sponsorship from Inweld Welding Alloys & Supplies, it would have been very tough for my family and I to race, and I really want to thank Inweld for giving me the opportunity to race and make a name for myself among some of the best karters in the racing world.”

Preston will race with the newest race team to come out of Canada, Hamilton based Prime Kartsport. Thought the name is new, its CRG product line is one Preston has had his hands on since mid-summer and he showed speed beyond a doubt from his first race onward. Debuting with a CRG Black Star at Mosport International Karting last summer running the Brian Stewart Racing Karting Championship, Preston produced his best qualifying run of the season in timing P12, lapped quicker and upgraded to P8 in the prefinal, and finished P7 in the main, setting a new rotax junior track record in the process. Testing and seat time only improved the situation, and he was poised to win the Ontario GrandNational just weeks later.

“We were so pleased with how the first race weekend went we knew we had our chassis for the rest of the season,” Preston recalled. “We felt we had put the season back on track with the Mosport run and we were ready to get back in the game. We went to Shannonville for GrandNationals thinking, ‘this may be our year,’ and it very nearly was.”

Of that there can be no doubt. Preston qualified on the outside of row three in Rotax Junior and ran a calculated race to win the prefinal and take pole for the final. He sat third most of the way, passed to second with two-to-go and produced a winning move on the final lap Saturday afternoon. “There were certain points of the track where we were faster than the field and at that point I felt as though it was the year I could finally get a Bear,” Preston said. “Trevor Wickens and Brendan Wales were very supportive, and we proved that our Florida results were not just a stroke of luck.”

In hindsight it was not to be, as overzealous early moves by others near the front of the field led to a number of lap one retirements, Preston’s among them. Yet the die had been cast, and a relationship formed that now sees the Oakville Trafalgar High School grade eleven student set to make a return to Florida.

“I am very excited about bringing the new CRG chassis down to Florida with Prime Kartsport,” Preston concluded. “I have been consistently fast here in Canada, and I expect to have the same results in Florida with my new mechanic Dale Millard. I fly out Wednesday morning at 5am, and can’t wait to be trackside in Orlando.”
