Many racers have had magical seasons during which skill, hard work and good fortune combined to create something special. Andrew Ranger had just such a season in 2009. Over the past few seasons, Canadian racing fans have been impressed by the talented Roxton Pond, Quebec racer as he’s transitioned from open wheel racing to stock cars with apparent ease. For his efforts, he won his second career Inside Track Readers’ Choice Award as Canadian Stock Car Racer of the Year (2007 & 2009). His efforts also earned him the prestigious Overall Canadian Racer of the Year honour.
In other Readers’ Choice Awards (RCA) news, Canadian racing legend Ron Fellows won his record-extending 15th career RCA when you tabbed him as being the Most Deserving of Induction Into the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame. Fellows is an integral part of the group rebuilding the Hall at its new Downsview (ON) location and it’s likely he’ll collect a few more RCAs before he finally hangs up his helmet.
Looking at some other categories, Robert Wickens came out on top of the Canadian Racer of the Year Competing at the Highest Levels of International Competition category, while Parts Canada Superbike Championship star Jordan Szoke scored another Motorcycle Racer of the Year honour. Castrol Canadian Touring Car champ Nick Wittmer was selected the Canadian Road Racer of the Year. Canadian National Junior Rotax Champion Garett Grist was presented the Kart Racer of the Year award.
The inaugural Dirt Oval Racer of the Year RCA went to Chris Raabe, while Victoria Smith (Drag Racing) and Andrew Comrie-Picard (Rallying) were tops in their respective categories. There were several ‘Up and Coming’ RCAs awarded in various racing disciplines. These awards celebrate Canada’s future racing stars and went to Justin Holtom (Stock Cars), Alex Healy (Road Racing) and Dean Wilson (Motorcycle Racing).
