With the release of the WCC schedule last week, the staff at EKN Canada are proud to unveil the fourth edition of the eKartingNews.ca Canadian Driver Rankings.

The EKN.ca Canadian Driver Rankings are calculated using a driver’s best finishes in Rotax Max events across Canada. A driver’s top five finishes in DD2, Rotax Senior and Rotax Junior are used to determine an overall current point total. We are also looking at adding Rotax DD2 masters to the program now that it has officially been added to the RMCGF. With each new release, results posted from more than one year ago are discarded. To deliver the ranking list, EKN.ca will tabulated results in all the major regional Rotax Max Challenge programs.

And racing in Canada is not without some interesting changes in 2010. The Canadian Nationals will return to Quebec and have been moved back two weeks to run on the third weekend in August rather the first weekend. The BSRKC has introduced several split weekends were two cycle karts will run on their own and four-cycle karts will have their own weekends. A new regional Rotax MAX Challenge has been added with the introduction of the Eastern Challenge that will run two races in Ontario and two races in Quebec. Also in 2010, like in 2009, the Quebec Championship will be pulled from three races in the Vega Cup and three races in the Coupe de Montreal.

Each race is initially weighted based on the prestige and history of the event or series with a score of ten being the highest attainable base ranking. The Canadian National Championships is the only event to receive a score of ten. All other events used in the calculations were given a base ranking of eight and include: the Western Canadian Karting Championship, Brian Stewart Racing Karting Championship, Coupe de Montréal, the Vega Cup and the Eastern Challenge. The EKN.ca staff reserves the right to adjust the rankings of each event throughout the year and from one season to the next. A total of 24 races will be used in the ranking covering, five different series running races in five different provinces.

Added to these initial rankings is a variable that helps confirm the true importance of an event to the ranking process – field size. A percentage of one weighting point is added for the size of the field. As the process continues, field strength will also become a factor, with the number of Top-25 drivers competing also having an effect on the value of an event. Following a race, drivers receive points based on their finishing positions with 100 points earned for a win. Each subsequent position drops by one point with 99 points given to the second place driver and so on throughout the field. These points are then multiplied by the overall ranking to produce a driver’s final point total from each event. Using a driver’s best five races, EKN.ca calculates each driver’s overall score and subsequent ranking.

"This year we will be updating the rankings each month once the season get sunderway starting in May," comments EKN.ca Editor Jeff Grist. "These rankings are important to our racers and our industry and we are proud to bring them to you."
