Coming off a stellar weekend at the opening round of the Brian Stewart Racing Karting Championship, which included a victory, Braydon Strik once again showed that he is a force to be reckoned with this season in the Rotax Mini-Max class, as he battled his way through thick and thin during round two to earn a podium finish. Racing at the Innisfil Indy, a track he has never been to before, he quickly became up to speed and was very excited to take on the challenge that was ahead of him entering the weekend. His true sportsmanship on and off the track also earned him the ‘Autosports Media Group BSRKC Junior Driver of the weekend’ award.

Saturday’s racing started off very well for the Maidstone, Ontario native as he posted the second fastest time in qualifying and placed himself on the outside pole-position. Jumping out to the lead early in the pre-final, he led the opening two laps of the heat race before disaster struck. Exiting turn one, the wet and slippery conditions forced him off track, and when he returned to the track, a dead battery resulted in his engine not re-firing, and left him to watch the remainder of his race from the sidelines. Starting from the last position on the grid for the final, Strik worked his way into the top five around the halfway mark, but by then the leaders were out of reach. Making a pass for the fourth position on the final lap, he came up just one position shy of a podium appearance.

“It was just an up and down day on Saturday,” commented a humble Strik from his home following the race weekend. “A bad battery cost of a shot at the victory on Saturday. I really enjoy racing in the rain, just wish the day could have ended a little better.”

Returning to the track on Sunday, warmer weather and a dry racing surface meant the racing conditions had changed completely from the day before. Showing it didn’t matter to him, he posted one of the fastest times in the morning Qualifying session, unfortunately, his team forgot to mount the transponder, and no official time was recorded. Once again starting from the last position on the grid, he charged his way through the field, and was into the top-three by lap five. Working into second place in the closing laps of the pre-final, he was all set to race for the win. Tucking into second place off the start, Strik hounded the leader in the opening laps of the final, waiting for the right time to pass. However, the time did not come, and although he tried his hardest, he couldn’t find a way into the lead, and settled for a solid second place finish.

Following the race, Strik spoke like a future champion about the race. “The leader and I were both very fast, and I didn’t want to make a move that could jeopardize either of us. I just waited for him to make a mistake, however he raced a great race, and left me no opportunities to pass him.”

With four top-four finishes, this puts Strik in a great position for the overall championship in the Rotax Mini-Max class. Up next for the youngster will be round three of the BSRKC on July 2-4 at Point Pelee Karting in Leamington. The track will act as home track, as he started his racing career there and hopes the home track will become an advantage for him. His local Snap-On Tools dealer Perry Orrange as well as his local Amsoil dealer supports him.
