This weekend marks round 5 of the Volkswagen Jetta Cup with the series heading to the Mid Ohio Sportscar Course, one of North America’s most famous racing circuits. For Canadian driver Jake Thompson, he will be looking to build on the momentum he gained with a big win last time out in Utah. Thompson currently sits 2nd in the championship standings, 30pts back of leader Juan Pablo Sierra Lendle. Last season the 2.2mile circuit proved tough for Jake, and he will be expecting a big improvement this time around to stay in the thick of the championship chase.
The Ohio race will also be the 5th event of Racing for the Right To Play, the pledge program Thompson put together to raise money for the international charity. The win in Utah resulted in another $1000 being raised, which puts the seasons total close to $3000. This weekend will also be the chance for Canadian viewers to get a behind the scenes glimpse into the TDI Cup. Racing Under Green, a 60 minute documentary that follows the 2009 TDI Cup Season will air this Saturday (June 19th) on Discovery Channel in Canada at 11pm ET (9pm MT). You can also see it in high definition on Discovery HD next Thursday June 24th, at 10pm ET. The film follows the series through all 10 rounds, and includes a brief stop in Calgary for a profile of Jake’s racing background.
