Tyler Wheeler’s first season of European competition continued this past weekend as he returned overseas for Round 3 of the German Karting Championships. Running in the KZ2 class with the Dutch PCR team AVG, Wheeler was looking for a points finish at the Wackersdorf circuit. Once again, he would be forced to spend the test day learning a new track that all of his competitors were already familiar with. Despite this, Wheeler would turn in his best qualifying performance of the year, taking 14th place, giving him a great starting spot for the heat races.

During the heats Wheeler would suffer from tire wear he had accumulated while chasing a fast time in qualifying. Although this left him 18th after the heats, it is all part of the learning experience that is helping him move closer to the front each time out. He would then move up two spots in the pre-final leaving him 16th on the grid for final, while feeling optimistic that with new rubber he could head towards the front.

In the final Wheeler would have a tough opening couple laps, losing a handful of positions, before showing great speed to move back up through the pack. He would eventually cross the line in the points with a solid 15th place finish, while running times that could easily have placed him inside the top 10.

Perhaps most importantly it was another great experience for Wheeler as he continues to adjust to the level of competition in Europe. In particular he is taking full advantage of learning from his teammate Manuel Renaudie, one of the top drivers in the world. For Tyler his next event is Rounds 3 & 4 of the Western Canadian Challenge in Saskatoon where he is front runner for the series championship after his win in Round 2 at Chilliwack.
