For the second consecutive event, Calgary’s Tyler Wheeler has reached the top step of the podium at the Western Canadian Karting Championships. Rounds 3 & 4 were held this past weekend at Martinsville Speedway outside of Saskatoon, and the headline Rotax Senior class featured a strong field of 28 karts. From the outset of practice on Thursday, Wheeler emerged as one of the top contenders for the weekend, frequently setting fast times as he dialed in the setup on his Overdrive PCR.
As official action got underway Saturday, Wheeler backed up his practice times by setting the top time in qualifying with a 44.8 second lap. Starting from pole in the pre-final, Tyler and Chris Glover would sprint away from the field opening up a large gap as they battled for the lead. In the end, Wheeler would settle for second and an outside front row grid spot. Unfortunately Saturday would not end well for the PCR driver, as a broken chain put him on the sidelines while battling for the lead in the early stages of the race.
Sunday would be a chance for redemption, and once again Wheeler was quickest of all in qualifying. After losing out in the pre-final to Glover on Saturday, the Overdrive team went to work, making small setup adjustments to maximize the handling of his PCR over a longer run, and this paid off, as Tyler was able to drive away to a comfortable victory in the pre-final, securing the all important pole position for the final. From the drop of the green flag, he once again took off from the field, building a massive lead by the midway point of the race. Wheeler was then able to cruise home, taking his second victory of the season in dominating fashion.
The win puts Wheeler at the top of the point’s standings heading into the final event of the championship, July 30-August 1st at Stratotech Park in Edmonton. Tyler Wheeler Motorsports would like to thank Overdrive Motorsports, Scuderia PCR, and Simark Controls for their support which made this win possible.
