| eKartingNews.ca Driver Rankings - Rotax Junior as of July 31, 2011 |
The EKN.ca Driver Rankings for June/July are now set as we inch nearer to the Canadian Nationals. With June only having a couple of events we decided to wait until the end of July and set the rankings as we head into August, one of the most important months for karting in Canada. The July Rankings include 25 events made up of seven races from the Western Canadian Championship (WCC), eight from Quebec, seven from the Eastern Canadian Karting Challenge (ECKC), two from Brian Stewart Racing Karting Championship (BSRKC) and the Canadian Nationals. In May we looked at 28 events that included six from the WCC, 11 from Quebec, four from the ECKC, six from BSRKC and the Nationals. As a reminder we take the best five results from the total number of events a driver runs in.
Most of the drivers that have moved up to Senior or moved on to race other things have dropped from the Rankings as they fall below the five event threshold so key in the overall scoring. In July the Rankings have 97 drivers with two or more starts, that’s up two from May. The total number of starts is up 8.5% from 482 in May to 527 in July. That takes the all-important average number of starts up from 5.07 in May to 5.43 in July. The evidence of this increase is in the bigger grids especially in the west that has seen dramatic growth in 2011. The title of most active racer is a tie between Olivier Bedard and Nicholas Dore at 16 races in the rankings one more then Jesse Lazare and two more then MAC Racing’s Marc-Antoine Cardin.
Staying on top for a third straight Ranking is Quebec’s Jesse Lazare (Intrepid). Lazare is followed in second spot by Olivier Bedard (Birel) who is nicely up three spots as he makes the most of his new red ride. Marc-Antoine Cardin (CRG) is down one to sit third with Cameron Morrison (Tony Kart) up two to sit in fourth place. Austin Milwain (Tony Kart) hangs on in fifth thanks to a couple of solid BSRKC races at the end of the 2010 season. PSL Karting’s Samuel Fontaine (CRG) is up two to sit in sixth while the always exciting Artem Korolev (Intrepid) also jumps two spots to take over seventh. Zachary Claman-Demelo (Tony Kart) makes a huge move in the standings, up an impressive 39 spots to take over eighth from his 47th spot debut in May and slotting himself nicely into the top ten. Western Canadian Front runner Zachary Scalzo (Lewis Hamilton) moves into the top ten in ninth place and Alex Guennette (Tony Kart) is up four to round out the top ten. The biggest mover in the EKN.ca Rankings is Parker Thompson (Tony Kart) who is up 64 positions to hold onto 17 from 81st in his debut in May. There are nine new names in the listing that now tops out at 253 names over the last four seasons.
In August it’s the Big Show. Yes it’s the Nationals. But for us here at EKN.ca it’s our only ten, and by ten we mean the only event that is weighted as a ten. Success at the Nationals is sure way to grab the all-important top spot in the EKN.ca Rankings.

Rotax Junior #1 - Jesse Lazare - Continues to lead
Dollard des Ormeaux, Quebec
Continued strong performances have kept Lazare at the top of rankings in July a spot he has held since last year and one he is not likely to let go of easily. The ultra quick teen has been active in both the ECKC and the Quebec Championship where Lazare has seen his share of podiums over the last 12 months. Looking to gain more experience Lazare headed oversses with veteran tuner and coach Stephen Chapman, were he finished 10th in Denmark at a recent Euro Challenge event. Up for grabs was a spot on Team Canada something Lazare is laser focused on securing. Lazare will have another chance in two weeks at the Canadian Nationals hosted again by Circuit Mont Tremblant where Lazare put on a spectacular run for the back of the field in the final. Heading into the event Lazare looks to put last years Nationals behind him and focus on taking the title in 2011.

Big Mover – Parker Thompson
Red Deer, Alberta
Apollo Motorsports Tony Kart driver Parker Thompson is no stranger to the podium. As one of the first Canadians to earn a spot on 2011 Team Canada, the Junior rookie sensation snagged the 2011 Gatorz Challenge of the Americas Junior Rotax title and smuggled an invite to the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals back to Canada. He then dominated the Rotax Junior class as a rookie in the Western Canadian Championship scoring the title in the process. Look for the uniquely dynamic 13-year-old to be a major part of the Team Canada Junior squad as they hit the sand draped country of United Arab Emirates.
