eKartingNews.ca Driver Rankings - Rotax Junior as of September 30, 2011

A new leader in the eKartingNews.ca Junior Driver Rankings has emerged to end the 2011 season. Quebec’s Olivier Bedard (Birel) grabs the top spot in the final ranking of the year from 2011 National Champion Jesse Lazare, who drops one spot to hold onto second place. Cameron Morrison (Tony Kart) is up one to take over third place as he continues his march to the top. Samuel Fontaine (CRG) jumps two steps to fourth place while Artem Korolev (Intrepid) also jumps two markers to take over fifth place. Nicholas Dore (Birel) slides into the top ten for the first time up an amazing seven markers to take sixth on the list. Alex Guenette (Kosmic) is up three spots to take seventh position while Zachary Claman-DeMelo (Tony Kart) holds station in eighth place. Alexandre Fortin (CRG) takes over ninth spot, up three from the last rankings. Rounding out the top ten is Maxime Couturier (Tony Kart) who is up four places from July. Quebec drivers dominate the top ten taking eight of eleven spots with Ontario drivers taking the other two. Western Canadian drivers missed the top ten but have three young guns knocking on the door with Parker Thompson (Tony Kart) in 11th, Mathew Moniz (Mach 1) in 12th, and Kyoichi Tsutsui (Vemme Kart) in 14th. Certainly one of the big stories has to be the rise of the Western Canadian Championship drivers in the rankings due in part to bigger grids and more ranked drivers taking in those events.

Taking in the 2011 Canadian Tire ASN Canada FIA Canadian National Karting Championships in August along with the final two rounds of the new Quebec Cup, this is the smallest rankings yet. In 2008 there were 32 events in the final ranking, with 25 in 2009 and 31 in 2010. In 2011 there are only 19 ranked events in the final tally. The year ends with 72 drivers on the rankings down from 97 in July. The big drop comes at the end of the year when all the previous season’s results are removed and drivers that have moved on drop out. The final report sees 413 starts for an average of 5.74 versus July that had 527 starts for an average of 5.43. Topping the list of starts are three drivers with thirteen including Couturier, Dore and Bedard. A total of ten new names were added to the listing for a small rookie field.

NEW Rotax Junior #1 - Olivier Bedard
Terrebonne, Quebec

Bedard has been quietly consistent all season long. The biggest gain for the second year Junior came in taking advantage of opportunities when he needed to. As other drivers faltered, the SRA Karting/Birel driver stepped up and made the most of the chance to gain wins and podiums. A solid 2011 Nationals had Bedard on the podium keeping his chances of the top spot in the rankings alive. The real magic came in the consistent results, as Bedard never finished outside the top ten in all thirteen starts in 2011. This included eight podiums and four wins to cap off a stellar season of racing. The change to the Birel chassis suited the young driver as he moved himself into the Number One spot for 2011.

Rotax Junior #2 - Jesse Lazare
Dollard des Ormeaux, Quebec

The quiet teen stormed to a much-anticipated National title in 2011. Heading into the event most felt Lazare was the man to beat and he never waivered under the intense pressure showing his true grit and determination. A season mixed with highs and lows has kept Lazare near the top of the Rankings but may have cost the Number One spot the Intrepid Canada driver held for most of the year. A couple of great runs in Europe show the true potential of Lazare, who will lead the Junior squad at the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals.
