Having created over 50 years of karting history on its original racing surface, Goodwood Kartways is about to get a face lift!

Plans and schedules have been finalized, and the track will close its gate to karting beginning this Monday (April 23) for a three-week span, as crews will begin construction by grinding down the existing top layer, and will continue by laying a new racing surface, curbing, and a few exciting new features for karters. The track will then go through a curing process before re-opening Monday (May 14). a week before its club schedule resumes, and 10 days prior to the opening round of the Eastern Canadian Karting Championship.

“It’ll cause some temporary pain, but the end result is going to really be something special for the karters,” said Track Manager Daniel Di Leo. “We’ve done extensive research while in the planning stages, and the result is going to be truly incredible. We’re paving with the same mix used at Le Circuit Karting Mont-Tremblant, and really getting things done right with the curbing and some state-of-the-art safety features that will keep Goodwood at the forefront. Of course we ask the karting community to be patient, and promise the final product will be well worth waiting for!”

The resurfacing of the racetrack has the Di Leo family tremendously excited, and they are very quick to point out the latest project would not be possible without the assistance and involvement of a well known Canadian karting patron.

“This project would not be possible without the involvement of Michael Latifi and the Sofina Driver Development Program,” Di Leo continued. “The principals of the Sofina Driver Development Program have been actively involved from its inception. From discussions regarding the scope of the project, to consideration and selection of contractors responsible for carrying out the task. The Sofina Team has been instrumental. With additional commitments from Andy DeFranceso and DeFrancesco Racing, Goodwood Kartways has support that is unparalleled, and for that we are truly thankful. Personally, I can’t wait to see the finished product, and look forward to re-opening the track to both the Latifi and DeFrancesco families, and of course the entire karting community.”

For his part, Latifi is equally thrilled with the project at hand, and provided his thoughts as the news was unveiled.

“I am very excited to be part of this project, as it promises to deliver a first-class racing track,” stated the Chairman and CEO of Sofina Foods Inc. “With Daniel and Marco Di Leo’s stewardship, Goodwood Kartways will continue to remain one of Canada’s top kart racing venues. I am grateful to have had tremendous support for this project from my friends Andy DeFrancesco of DeFrancesco Racing, and Jim DeGasperis of Condrain Group.”

Since winding down car racing careers of their own and taking a firm grip on the reigns at Goodwood, the Di Leo’s have continuously improved the facility while working through a master plan. Visitors will have noted significant projects in all areas of the property, beginning in the Spring of 2004. First came new track lighting, followed by a face lift for the interior of the club house a year later. The pit shelter was constructed in 2007, red and white racing barriers replaced tire walls in 2008, and prior to hosting the Canadian National Karting Championships in the summer of 2009 Goodwood added a new timing and scoring tower, added curbing, a new North parking area and corrected problem areas on the racing surface. Drainage was improved as the major project of 2010, and last summer the facility had a new security system installed.

ASN Canada's Paul Cooke has had his eyes on the operation throughout, and once again offered his full support when the most recent project was unveiled.

“Since acquiring the Goodwood facility, the Di Leo family has been tremendous to work with,” Cooke said this week. “Daniel and Marco know and understand what race tracks are all about, and recognize what kart racing drivers, teams and sponsors need in a racing facility. Working with the Di Leo team on this project has been exciting, and like most, I'll be looking forward to the return of racing in May.”

In that respect Cooke will certainly not be alone. Goodwood Kartways has also made a multitude of kart racing programs available, ranging from rental karts to the powerhouse Intrepid North America race team, and all will be eagerly awaiting for the gate to swing open come mid-May. Canada’s busiest karting venue is the permanent home to over 120 members of the Toronto Racing Association of Karters, and hosts a Canadian Rookie Karting Championship that runs over 750 drivers per year. Add in special events like the annual opening round of the Eastern Canadian Karting Championship and private driver testing programs, and Goodwood Kartways will see lap totals this year creeping close to one million! The new surface will be well tested, and has certainly been well earned.
