Week one of construction has been successfully completed at Goodwood Kartways and the operation remains completely on schedule, if not ahead of its predicted pace!

Though Mother Nature tried her best to save the famed venue with overnight snowfall last Sunday (April 22), trucks moved in on Monday despite the weather obstacles. Excavation began with the oldest curbing removed, and the planned renovation moved ahead at full throttle.

“I’m very pleased with the progress this week,” said Track Manager Daniel Di Leo, who was on hand all seven days overseeing the operation. “The weather made things difficult initially, but staying on schedule is one of our top priorities and the entire crew has done a great job staying on pace. The dedicated effort from everyone on site has helped us complete each task on time, and now we’re on to week number two!”

Along with the initial excavating and removal of curbing, major changes began in the early part of a Goodwood lap. The turn one berm was moved back to allow for extra runoff and a 25-stone retaining wall was put in place, each stone measuring eight feet in length and weighing in at an incredible five tonnes! The turn two-three area was widened to create more space during starts, and a new turn four runoff was dug out. The entire track surface was ground and graded for drainage, all asphalt prep work was completed, and 390 linear feet of CIK-spec curbing was poured in replacing eight existing curbs and creating four new ones around the track.

“It’s bitter sweet to see this happening,” Di Leo said following the first week of the project. “Goodwood has brought so many fond memories to so many families, it was hard watching the trucks destroy the original surface - the original surface that has helped groom some of Canada’s best racers. But, knowing what is in store for the future eases the pain, as I’m confident that the new facility will begin adding to a rich history from day one.”

Week number two will begin with more staging with the new top coat set to go down mid-week. To view the week one construction photo gallery or for further information, please visit goodwoodkartways.com
