The 2012 season is off to a great start for Sherwood Park, Alberta’s Griffin Dowler, after the nine-year-old successfully began a charge for his third straight Micro Max title in the Western Canadian Championships. The third grader turned in a strong performance during the WCC opener at Greg Moore Raceway in Chilliwack, BC this past weekend, sweeping five of the six official sessions en route to a pair of victories in the Saturday and Sunday main events.
On Saturday, Griffin topped each session and was the only driver to dip under the one-minute mark all weekend. The Apollo Motorsports-backed Tony Kart pilot won by over six seconds to begin his Micro Max title defense. Sunday’s events were a little closer, as he was pipped in qualifying by under a tenth, but he fought back when the rain came and once again finished ahead of his rivals in the Prefinal and Final.
Griffin is the youngest son of retired CASCAR / NASCAR Canadian Tire series driver Kevin Dowler, and has been karting for three years after beginning his career in the Micro Max class at the age of seven. For 2012, Griffin started the season by running the Gatorz Challenge of the Americas, a Rotax Max winter series that is run in Arizona and California through the months of January, February and March. The competition is tough in this series and Dowler ended up a strong fourth overall in the point standings on the strength of four straight top-five finishes in Phoenix and Fontana to cap his US effort. For the remainder of the season, Griffin will be focusing on the Western Canadian Championships and his home club events with the Edmonton District Kart Racing Association. The Dowlers are also contemplating trips to Quebec for the Canadian National Championships at Mt. Tremblant in August and Las Vegas for the Superkarts! USA SuperNationals in November.
