Cooper and Szigeti Triumph in ICAR ECKC Battle
The third round of the Eastern Canadian Karting Championships marked the series’ first trip to the unique Circuit ICAR facility and a full paddock meant that intense racing would be a given. The resultant on-track competition was exciting, as the main events provided both closely-fought battles and dominating performances.
British driver Ben Cooper emerged as the victor in the DD2 category, but he needed to fight all day to score the win, while Steven Szigeti was embroiled in a cage match of his own in Senior Max. The Tony Kart driver stepped up his game in the Final and will take the point lead to Mosport in two weeks. Other Rotax winners included Stuart Clark (DD2), Parker Thompson (Junior), Giancarlo Mazaferro (Mini) and Matthew Latifi (Micro).
The weather for raceday was a little on the warm side, but it was otherwise a perfect setting for the competition. The track had been taking rubber all weekend and grip levels were sure to be high. The layout at ICAR rewards aggressive racing lines and the need to use all of the curbing in several sections of the track guaranteed that it would be physically taxing on all the competitors. This would be a great test for the ECKC racers.

After a successful start to the 2012 Eastern Canadian Karting Championship just a few weeks ago, the series is set to host the third of six rounds this weekend (June 16-17) at Circuit ICAR in Mirabel, Quebec. The facility, located on the now closed Mirabel International Airport grounds, is the home of PSL Montreal, and features a 1-km karting track designed by Formula One World Champion Jacques Villeneuve.
The challenging and unique layout will play host to the ECKC for the first time in series history this weekend, and will be a new track for many series drivers. With two rounds in the books after the Goodwood Kartways opening weekend, Round 3 marks the halfway point for Canada’s premier karting series. Championship point battles are already heating up and rivalries have been established, and if the first two rounds are any indication of what is to come, drivers, teams, and spectators are in for more spectacular racing action this weekend.

HITTING THE ROAD
So here I am, rolling down the 401 in the passenger seat, bound for the ICAR facility in Quebec. We’re on our way to the second round of the Eastern Canadian Karting Championship, and it will be my first coverage race of the year. I’ve had the opportunity to compete in a couple of Waterloo Regional Kart Club races this season, but this will be the first time in many years that I’ve attended a Canadian kart race with my camera bag and laptop in hand. I’m pumped.
I want to try a different approach to our EKN.ca Trackside Live program, so in addition to daily reports on the site and firing up photos on Facebook, I’m going to put together a bunch of interviews and will be posting to this blog. It’s something a little different, and I hope you like it. Please feel free to send us feedback via email – news@ekartingnews.ca
