GAMEBRIDGE, ONT. (June 28, 2012) - Recently taking on the challenging Circuit ICAR facility in Mirabel, Que., for the Coupe du Quebec and Eastern Canadian Karting Championship, Energy Kart Canada made a statement during the action packed weekend. With Energy Kart Canada's newest team member and karting sensation Santino Ferrucci taking to the Circuit ICAR for the first time during the doubleheader event weekend, the new team and driver combo made quite the impression in the ultra-competitive Rotax Junior category.

With the 1.05-km circuit set on the grounds of the now closed Mirabel International Airport, Team Energy Canada and team driver Ferrucci were met with some difficult track conditions. A concrete surface and tricky curbing made it difficult to adjust to the grip levels. Also, as a new circuit for the team as well as Ferrucci, the crew and driver went to work over the pre-event test day to get up to speed.

"We worked very hard over the test day to get the right set-up," explained Energy Kart Canada principal Ravinder Sanghera. "After struggling with a lack of grip, we reverted to the 'Out of Box' set-up and it worked perfectly. The kart was balanced throughout the weekend with grip levels where we wanted them to be and with a track that was evolving throughout the weekend, the Energy needed little to no set-up changes to suit the changing conditions."

"Santino was focused on developing his style sector by sector until he was confident he had the optimal line," noted Energy Kart Canada principal Jayson Nazario. "It was very easy and relatively straight forward to get Santino comfortable in the Energy at ICAR, a track he had no experience on. After practice we were up there with the top three and confident for the race. Our only point of concern was our engine, as we seemed to be a little down on power, something that would hamper our weekend in the end."

Taking to the track Saturday (June 16) for the third round of the Coupe du Quebec regional series, Ferrucci had a successful qualifying session. An aggressive start in the prefinal saw Ferrucci move through the field quickly, finishing P3. Setting up an epic battle for the 20-lap final, Ferrucci moved into first though the turn one hairpin at the drop of the green. Another textbook start for the American star, Ferrucci had discussed this opening corner maneuver with his mechanic under the team tent and executed it flawlessly. With a close battle, as the top three matched each others lap times, Ferrucci suffered an unfortunate engine failure with only two corners remaining. As is with racing, the hard luck was a result of the high temperatures, and with a malfunctioning MyChron during the closing laps, Ferrucci was not able to see the engine temperature starting to creep up.

"We were very pleased with the performance despite the engine failure," added Sanghera. "Santino gave it 110%, was focused, dedicated and relentless throughout the weekend thus far in trying to get the maximum out of the kart. After Saturday's event, we quickly settled into a long night of rebuilding the engine for the Sunday ECKC event. With support from fellow teams (a great show of sportsmanship), Energy Kart Canada was able to rebuild our engine late in the evening."

Retuning to the track Sunday for the headline ECKC event, everyone under the Energy Kart Canada team tent was tired but ready to go. An excited Ferrucci was determined to put Saturday's Coupe du Quebec disappointment behind him. Getting on track for the morning warm-up, the team utilized most of the session for breaking in their rebuilt motor. With the last chance to dial in the chassis for the race, Ferrucci spent the entire session, except for the last lap, on and off the throttle gradually bringing his Rotax up to temperature. Nonetheless, Ferrucci was encouraged with how the kart was handling and Team Energy Canada elected not to change anything on the chassis before qualifying.

In a tight qualifying session, Ferrucci put his Energy Kart P7, quite the feat considering his lack of running at speed during morning practice. Just two and a half tenths off pole, Ferrucci and the team now had to put it all on the line during wheel-to-wheel action. The start of the prefinal saw Ferrucci make a perfect start, going from seventh to fifth by the first corner. Battling hard with the competitors ahead, Ferrucci quickly moved to third with a gap to the leaders up front. Ferrucci slowly closed the gap and was soon challenging for the second position. With the leaders continuing to battle hard, there was little room to pass, as Ferrucci had to settle for the third position. With a great position secured for the start of the feature race, Ferrucci and his Energy Kart crew were confident in the starts, and the final proved just that. At the drop of the green for the final, Ferrucci was able to move inside the leaders by the first corner and take over the point down the long straight. Leading the opening flyers, it became apparent that Ferrucci and his Energy Kart ride had the pace in the infield, but the engine lacked down the straight. Eventually getting shuffled back, Ferrucci continued to fight and finished just off the podium in fourth.

"We are very pleased with the performance this weekend," concluded Sanghera. "The chassis worked flawlessly, and with a little more performance from the engine, victory in our first ICAR event in the increasingly competitive and tight Rotax Junior field was absolutely within our reach. An outstanding result for our new fresh team!"
