TROIS-RIVIERES, QUE. (July 9, 2012) - Four members of Team PSL Karting impressed at the recent JET Karting Rotax Summer Shootout, held over the June 29-July 1 weekend. As the preliminary event before the United States Rotax Grand Nationals later this summer, PSL Karting USA sent auxiliary team equipment to the JET Karting at Michiana Raceway Park facility in northern Indiana for the Shootout, and came home with multiple race wins and podiums. While the weekend was mainly utilized for testing in preparation for the Grand Nationals, team drivers also completed two of the necessary four “punches” in order to qualify for the August event. With 2011 Rotax DD2 US Grand National Champion Kristina Vorndran on top of the DD2 action, Austin Versteeg and Matthew Thomas also earned podium finishes, showing that PSL Karting has what it takes to earn more championship titles in 2012.

In a small field of Rotax DD2 pilots, Vordran showed why she is the reigning US DD2 Champion. Earning top honours across the board during Saturday’s events, Vorndran was met with more competition on Sunday and didn’t falter. Again sweeping the day, Vorndran will no doubt be the driver to beat for the 2012 DD2 title and corresponding Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals/Team USA berth.

Rotax Junior driver Versteeg will be a contender in the junior ranks come August. Clocking third quick in qualifying on Saturday, the 2011 Florida Winter Tour Mini Max Champion just missed the podium with his fourth place finish in the day’s feature race. Back on track Sunday, Versteeg struggled in qualifying, only clocking 13th quick in the 23-kart field. Progressing to ninth in the prefinal, Versteeg then put the pedal to the metal in the final. Picking off karts one by one, Versteeg made it to third by the checkered flag.

“Austin had his best performance of his junior career at the Shootout,” explained PSL Karting USA’s team manager Andrew Campbell. “He has shown a lot of growth on track, is physically better able to handle the kart, and his confidence level is at an all-time high. I am really happy with Austin’s development.”

Matthew Thomas added another podium finish to PSL’s tally. In his first visit to the JET Karting/MRP facility, Thomas justed miss the pole position in the Mini Max class by a scant 0.080 seconds on Saturday. The Miami, Fla., resident would then stay in the mix during the prefinal, finishing third. Falling back to fourth at the start of the final, the rising star worked up to second by lap seven, and held on to earn yet another podium finish in 2012. Sunday saw Thomas just miss the podium with his fourth place run in the day’s feature. With the two race days now under his belt at the 2012 Grand Nationals circuit, Thomas will certainly be a challenger for the US Mini Max title later this summer.

“This weekend was a real learning experience for Matthew,” continued Campbell. “He was able to gain experience not only racing, but with engine and tire management as well over the two days. He is our newest team Mini Max driver, and I see a lot of potential in Matthew becoming an exceptional racer in the future.”

PSL Karting newcomer Dan Roeper also took on Shootout action this weekend. Utilizing his time to get acquainted with his new CRG ride before the US Grand Nationals, Roeper earned two solid top-10 finishes in Rotax Senior, taking 10th on Sunday and improving to fifth on Sunday.

“Dan was quick all weekend long,” Campbell finished. “He struggled getting through the first corner, but overall put on a great performance.”

PSL Karting USA will take on the US Rotax Grand Nationals on August 7-11, at the same JET Karting/MRP facility near South Bend, Indiana. The team will be vying for seven national titles and 13 invitations to the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals during the August event.
