Manitoba Karting Association

The Manitoba Karting Association is the leading karting force in the province of Manitoba. The only ASN associated club offering kart racing within the province, the club is organized and operated by a dedicated group of volunteers. The club runs a 10-race championship from early May to late September, in addition to practice days, and test and tune sessions, as well as special street race events.

The Manitoba Karting Association was formed in the early 1970's as a means of providing karters within the province a forum to organize and compete. Since its inception, the club has continually worked at organizing, coordinating, and directing races in Manitoba, while also seeking to grow the sport. One of the early highlights of the MKA was hosting the 1980 Canadian Karting Championships at Gimli Motorsport Park, which was featured a young Paul Tracy taking the 100cc National and 100cc International class wins. Later on the MKA hosted some of the biggest street races in Canada, such as the Exchange District Grand Prix in Downtown Winnipeg which had drivers from all across Western Canada competing in front of over 10,000 spectators. This event was subsequently moved to Wall Street in Winnipeg for the Piston Ring Grand Prix around the Piston Ring Headquarters. Most recently the MKA has organized and run the Russell Grand Prix in Russell, Manitoba.

Manitoba Karting Association alumni include Mike Balcaen (winner of over 35 Late Model Championships), Daniel Burkett (2011 Team Canada driver at World Rotax Max Grand Finals), Ward Imrie (two-Time WKA Manufacturing Cup Champion,Skip Barber Karting Scholarship winner, and National race winner), Mike Kerdes (Formula F1600 Winner), and David Riechert (Italian Formula Renault and Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup racer).

The Manitoba Karting Association offers a variety of classes for racers to showcase their talents. With a mix of karting newcomers and seasoned veterans getting behind the wheels throughout the season, the over 50 full-time MKA members compete in Junior 1, Junior 2, and Senior utilizing 4-cylce powerplants, as well as Micro-Max, Mini-Max, Junior, Senior, and DD2 in Rotax.

The home facility for the talented Manitoba Karting Association drivers is Gimli Motorsports Park. Located on the grounds of a former Airforce base in Gimli, Mb. (situated approximately 1 1/2 hour north of Winnipeg, Mb.) the facility contains a 1-km karting track. Recently updated, the 13-turn layout features AMB timing, and provides both technical challenges, as well as drafting opportunities. In addition to the course, racers have access to a large paved paddock and pit area, as well as a club house with proper washroom facilities and showers.
