The editorial staff recently spoke with Scott Campbell, who finished second at the Kartodromo Internacional do Algarve in DD2 Masters in his record ninth Grand Finals appearance.

EKN Breaking News: 2013 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals Scheduled for United States

As the 2012 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals comes to a close, the MAXSpeed Group is excited to announce that the 2013 Grand Finals will be coming to the United States. The event will be held in November at the karting facility at the NOLA Motorsports Park, just outside New Orleans, Louisiana.

EKN Trackside: 2012 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals – Friday Heat Race/LCQ

Thursday was the final day at the 2012 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals to qualify for the 34 spots in the four categories to compete for the prize of world champion at the Kartodromo Internacional do Algarve. Aware that a place in the Prefinals and Finals were still up for grabs, Friday's on-track action in Portugal featured a final Heat race for all the drivers, and for a few it was a Last Chance Qualifier to make one of the transfer spots into tomorrow’s big show.

EKN Trackside: 2012 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals – Thursday Heat Races

With an eye on gaining a quality starting position in the Rotax Grand Finals main events on Saturday, drivers headed into Thursday action at Kartodromo Internacional do Algarve with a focus on running clean as each of the four groups (DD2, DD2 Masters, Senior, and Junior) would all be contesting four heat races per class.

EKN Trackside: 2012 Rotax Grand Finals – Wednesday Practice / Qualifying

The Rotax Grand Finals finally put in its first official timed session today when qualifying capped off the third day of on-track action. Held at the Kartodromo Internacional Algarve in Portimao, Portugal, this global karting event has brought together drivers from over 40 countries and, as it stands, it looks like Team Canada has presented a formidable force for this year’s edition. After a final morning practice run, it was time for all the Rotax Grand Final racers to take part in their lone qualifying sessions, setting the grids for the subsequent heat races, which will take place on Thursday and Friday. The qualifying sessions were 15-minute affairs and would finally give the paddock a true look at who would be the players in Saturday’s battle.

EKN Trackside: 2012 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals – Tuesday Practice

Tuesday dawned cool and clear at the Kartodromo Internacional Algarve for the second day of on-track action at this year’s Rotax Grand Finals, but the drivers were all eager to heat things up following Monday’s lone practice session. For most, the opening session was used simply to learn the track layout and do some basic chassis and engine diagnosis. Today, it was all about finding speed, fine-tuning their chassis and determining where they sat in the overall order. After breaking things in on Monday, it got serious from the get-go this morning.

Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals - Team Canada Profile

Team Canada, as expected, will be well represented at the 2012 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals. With a talented group of 14 drivers competing in the four classes (DD2, DD2 Masters, Senior, and Junior) at the Kartódromo Internacional do Algarve, the goal will be to once again have the red and white maple leaf flag flying from the top of the podium come Sunday. With four former world champions on the squad and five world titles (DD2 in 2011, 2010 & 2007 / DD2 Masters in 2010 & 2006) on the Team Canada resume, leaving Portugal with more world trophies is not out of the question.

Ahead of qualifying and the races, here is a brief look at who will be racing for Team Canada this time out.

Four Team Canada Members Represent ECKC at Rotax Grand Finals

The Eastern Canadian Karting Championship will again be well represented when Team Canada drivers take on the world during the 2012 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals. Taking place this week at the Kartódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimao, Portugal, four drivers representing the ECKC will look to rise to the top during the "Olympics of Karting." Class champions Marco Di Leo, Zachary Claman DeMelo, Stuart Clark, along with Vice-Champion Pier-Luc Ouellette make up the highly-talented contingent of ECKC drivers, part of a 14-driver strong Team Canada, and all four have what it takes to put Canada and the ECKC on top during the prestigious event.

Ottawa, Ont., resident Zach Robichon will race in DD2 against 68 other racers, having earned his place on Team Canada as the runner-up at the Canadian Karting Championships.

Cooper and Ouellette to Battle for DD2 Honors at Grand Finals

At the 2011 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals in Al Ain, U.E.A. last November, Ben Cooper, from the United Kingdom, won the title in the Rotax Max class, while Pier-Luc Ouellette, from Canada, won the title in the Rotax DD2 class. In 2012 the duo will go head-to-head-in Portugal for the DD2 crown.

Four ECKC Standouts Earn Team Canada Invite

With the completion of the 2012 Eastern Canadian Karting Championship, four drivers have earned an invitation to race in the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals as part of Team Canada.

The champion of the Rotax DD2, DD2 Masters, Rotax MAX Senior and Rotax MAX Junior classes earned an invitation to join Team Canada in the world renowned Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals, which will take place in Portimao, Portugal, next November.

Four Drivers will Join Team Canada this Weekend

The final round of the Eastern Canadian Karting Championships takes place this Sunday in Trois-Rivières, Qué., at Le petit Monaco street race event. At the end of the day, four drivers will be invited to join Team Canada and race at the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals next November in Portugal. This will set the number of qualified drivers to six because Nicholas Latifi (DD2) and Zacharie Scalzo (Max Junior) already qualified through the American winter series.

Team Canada: Latifi and Scalzo Now Qualified for the Grand Finals!

With the presentation of the last round of the Gatorz Challenge of the Americas this past weekend, the US 'Winter Series' programs are now closed. From these two popular series, a pair of Canadian drivers have earned the right to will Team Canada to race at the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals next November in Portugal.
